County Junior Team – Match Report – 6th April

The county junior team played host to Avon and Somerset, overseen by Dave Adamson, team coach, at Deer Park to finish off the season.  The team for the day was boys: Jack Collings, Olly Tyndall, Billy Shilton; girls: Beth Williams, Margaret Pang.

Against Somerset, Olly and Billy made a confident start, quickly putting the team 2-0 up.  Next up was Beth vs Beth (Atkinson) and Jack vs Jack (Cross), which both turned out to be close encounters that, unfortunately, didn’t go our way.  A similar fate awaited Margaret who went down in 5 to Beth.  Things then swung back in Gloucestershire’s favour as Olly and Jack were able to add 1 a piece, to square off the match at 4-4.  Unfortunately, the final two matches went to Somerset with a noteable performance from their number 2 Jack Cross, at least 14 inches taller, much improved, and unbeaten on the day.  Final score: Gloucestershire 4, Somerset 6.

Avon turned up two players short, with only two boys and one girl, and it was at this stage the Gloucestershire finally got into gear.  Olly started with a good win over Avon number 1, Josh Kashdan, while Jack got the better of, pen-holder number 2, Robin Francis.  Avon number 1 girl, little sister, Jess Kashdan, playing up, was no match for our girls, as Beth and Margaret both won their matches comfortably.  Finally Jack came off on top in a 4-setter vs Josh to give Gloucestershire a comfortable 9-1 victory to end the season, along with an early finish to have us home in time to see the Grand National.

Although the loss to Somerset was a little disappointing, it could easily have gone our way.  It has been particularly pleasing to see such an improvement in the younger members of the team along with good support from the older players, who made valuable contributions in the face of looming exams.  On balance I feel quite optimistic for subsequent seasons.

Please find below the final tables and averages for this season’s County Junior League. Congratulations to Gloucester for retaining their title. The other teams will need to raise their game to wrestle the title away from them next season. Only two players ended the season undefeated – Ben Roberts and Hamza Bham remained unbeaten throughout all 3 rounds.

I would like to thank all the team managers and players for their co-operation and good sportsmanship. There was never an issue with anyone umpiring and the conduct on the table was excellent.

Thanks also to Janie Kirby for assisting me at each of the 3 rounds and to County President Les Smith for presenting the certificates, medals and trophy.

I look forward to an even more competitive league next season.

The third round of the County Junior League took place on Saturday, 23rd February at Deer Park, Cirencester.

Gloucester appear to be in prime position to take the title this year. With one round to go they have a 13 point lead over Stroud who in turn lead Cheltenham by 11 points. Cirencester have broken their duck thanks to Isabelle Cartwright’s win over Mary Pang who deputised for Cheltenham in the absence of their girl player.

The closest match of the day was between Dan Ind and Matt Mycoe. Dan eventually triumphed 13-11, 11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 23-21! All of the Gloucester boys retained their 100% records as did Emily Philp in the girls.

The final round of matches is at Robin Greaves Sports Hall, Waterwells, Quedgeley on Saturday 9th March. Please arrive by 1.45pm for a 2pm start.

Gloucestershire 2*

Feb 142013

The Gloucestershire 2* is being run by the Gloucestershire Table Tennis Association on Sunday, 3rd March at Deer Park as a replacement for the Cotswold 4*. The first event starts at 9.30am and the event is scheduled to finish at 5.30pm.

We are looking for volunteers to help run the day (stewards, etc) and also some qualified umpires to umpire the later rounds of each event. Please let Ken Bridle know if you will be able to assist. Myself and Janie Kirby (GTTA Vice-Chairman) have already advised Ken that we will be there to help.

Please remember that all profits from this event will go to Gloucestershire Table Tennis Association and as such everyone who plays table tennis in Gloucestershire will benefit. I hope Ken will be flooded with offers of help.

Thanks and regards,

The Gloucestershire County Closed Table Tennis tournament was held at Deer Park School, Cirencester on Sunday 6th January. There was a good turnout this year and the standard of play was excellent.

The U13s was won by up and coming youngster Olly Tyndall, with Alex Roberts as runner-up. The Boys U15 saw some upsets in the semi-finals, leaving Owen Berry and Jamie Theyer to fight for the top spot. In a tightly fought match Owen Berry emerged the victor in the 5th set (8/11, 11/4, 11/9, 7/11, 11/2). The Boys U18 had 12 entrants and after some hard fought games the final was between Olly Tyndall and Ben Roberts. At 2 sets a piece it was all down to the last set which Tyndall won (12/14, 11/7, 9/11,11/0,11/7) and retained his position as Gloucestershire’s top junior. The girls U18s was won by Emily Philp with the runner up Rachel Johnson. The U18 Boys doubles competition resulted in Olly Tyndall and Billy Shilton beating Ben Glover and Jamie Theyer in a 4 set final.

10 ladies entered for the Ladies Singles; there were some lively matches, with Ann Barnes running out the winner and Mel Boulton taking the runner up spot. In the Veteran Ladies the winner was Carol Philp and the runner up Janie Kirby. The Ladies Doubles was won by Mel Boulton and Ann Barnes with Janie Kirby and Lesley Slack taking the runners up spot.

The Mixed Doubles was between 8 pairs and after some challenging games the winners were Ann Barnes and Bill Dawe who fought off Lesley Slack and Russell Hayward in 4 sets (12/10, 11/5, 9/11, 11/5) in the final.

The 12 pairs of players in the Men’s Doubles had some cracking games along the way and resulted in the thrilling final. Dave and Mike Harvey were worthy winners over Bill Dawe and Martin Gunn.

The Minor Singles (not Division 1 players) was hotly contested and saw Joe Ansley beat Craig Smart in the final.

The semi finals of the Veterans saw the top 4 Gloucestershire men fighting for a place in the Final. Darren Griffin beat Bill Dawe in 5 sets, and Martin Gunn beat Dave Harvey in 4 sets, leaving Griffin and Gunn to fight out the top spot. Griffin was the winner in a hard fought match with some entertaining play from both players (10/12, 11/9, 11/8, 13/11).

In the Masters competition Gordon Shaw was the winner over Tom Watmore.

The Men’s Singles competition was a tightly fought set of matches with father and son Dave and Mike Harvey facing each other in one semi final – Dave winning in 4 sets; and the other semi was between old rivals Darren Griffin and Bill Dawe. In a tight match, Griffin was the victor in 5 sets and went on to meet Dave Harvey in the final. Harvey won the first set, Griffin the next 2 and Harvey took it to 2 all with everything to play for in the 5th. Griffin was 9 – 4 up and must have had his sights set on another County title – however, Harvey upped his game to beat Griffin 13 – 11 to take the top spot in Gloucestershire at this season’s County Closed tournament (12/10, 3/11, 4/11, 11/7, 13/11).

The Gloucestershire Schools Individual table tennis championships were held at Robin Greaves Sports Centre, Waterwells, Quedgeley on Saturday 5 January. The events held were Boys U11, Boys U13, Boys U16, Boys U19 and Girls U16 and a total of 46 competitors took part from all over the county.

The boys U11 had a total of 8 entries who played in two groups of 4. The semi finals saw Ben Tyndall (Gloucester) beat Ryan Marsden (Cheltenham) and Irek Nawiesniak (Cheltenham) beat Stanley Shilton (Stroud). The final was a one sided affair with Ben running out a comfortable winner.

The Boys U13 had 15 entries who played in 4 groups. Olly Tyndall (Gloucester) beat Rasmus Haycraft (Stroud) in the first semi final and Shrey Bhardwaj (Cheltenham) saw off the challenge of Michael Pang (Gloucester) in the second semi final. Olly proved to be too strong for Shrey in the final winning in 3 close games.

The Boys U16 saw the largest entry and the 17 players played in 4 groups. Top seed Ben Roberts (Gloucester) defeated Ben Glover (Stroud) in 4 close games in the first semi final, whilst Billy Shilton (Stroud) scored a narrow 3-2 victory over Owen Berry (Gloucester) in the second. Billy raised his game to defeat Ben 3-0 to take the title.

The Boys U19 had just two entrants but the match was a thriller with Sam Turner (Gloucester) just edging out Sam Warner (Cheltenham) in 5 very close games.

The Girls U16 was a group of 4 and Margaret Pang (Gloucester) won all her matches although she was pushed all the way by runner-up Emily Philp (Stroud) with Margaret winning 11-9 in the final game.

All the winners go forward to the national schools finals at the Doncaster Dome on Saturday 20 April. I hope they all do Gloucestershire proud.

Thanks to all the players for attending on the day and for their sportsmanship and good manners.

A big thanks also go to the small army of helpers who helped set the venue up, steward and umpire throughout the afternoon, and then cleared up at the end.

Hi everyone,

We are now approaching the mid point of another season and titles everywhere are still up for grabs. I hope you are involved in close matches this season and are achieving your aims.

It is pleasing that each league now has its own table tennis centre. Cirencester remains at Deer Park, Cheltenham splits itself between Cheltenham Ladies College and Cheltenham Boys College Barn, Gloucester has moved in to the new Robin Greaves Sports Centre, Waterwells and Stroud is now based at Stroud Leisure Centre. This is great news for all the leagues as it gives them all a base for coaching and practice. I understand that numbers are thriving everywhere and this is very encouraging for the future of table tennis in Gloucestershire.

We have 9 people in the process of qualifying as UKCC Level 1 coaches and 3 taking the bridging course to become UKCC Level 2 coaches. This will mean that there will be many more coaches available to help anyone who requires coaching. Please ask your local league coaching officer if you would like some coaching.

Please remember that the closing date for entries for the Gloucestershire Closed on 6 January at Deer Park is 21 December and the closing date for entries for the Gloucestershire Schools Individual tournament on 5 January at Waterwells is 22 December. Please have a go and support these events.

If anyone has any questions, comments or complaints about table tennis in Gloucestershire please e-mail me or give me a ring.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and hope to see you at one (or both) of the tournaments in January.
